Adult Handwriting Practice Sheets
Ages 16 and up · letter body 2.67mm · pitch 8.01mm
Adult handwriting improves fastest by fixing size consistency and spacing, not letterforms. Most illegible adult writing has perfectly reasonable letter shapes that are inconsistent in size and crowded together.
What most children can do at this stage
- Diagnose your own writing, which children cannot do and which is the biggest advantage adults have
- Practise deliberately on the specific letters that fail rather than the whole alphabet
- Work on ruling around 8mm, which matches normal adult ruled paper rather than school paper
What usually goes wrong
- Practising the whole alphabet when four letters are the problem. Write a paragraph, then find the letters you cannot read back.
- Confusing legibility with calligraphy. Neat and slow is not the goal; readable at your natural speed is.
- Grip tension. Most adults grip far harder than they need to, which limits speed and causes fatigue.
How much practice
Ten minutes a day for a few weeks, on real sentences rather than isolated letters. Isolated letter drills do not transfer well to connected writing.
Why the size matters
The sheets below use a letter body of 2.67mm. Every preset on this site follows the rule that published handwriting paper uses: the space above the midline, the letter body, and the space below the baseline are equal, so the line pitch is exactly three times the letter body. That is why the guides line up with the letters at any size.
Pitch 8mm. Documented adult ruled paper runs 6.4 to 8.7mm.
