Every sheet is built from one measurement, and both the ruling and the letterforms derive from it. Generators built on fonts position their guides from line spacing instead, so the letters never quite sit on the lines they are drawn against.
We can show the stroke
Because we draw each letter ourselves, in order, we know where the pencil starts and which way it travels. A font only knows the finished shape, which is why no font-based worksheet can show stroke order.

Most handwriting practice sheets are files. Somebody made a page of the letter A, saved it, and everyone downloads that same page. It works until the moment you need something slightly different: this week's spellings, a child's own name, the four letters they keep reversing, a sentence from the book they are reading. The one thing that makes these sheets different
Nearly every handwriting worksheet on the internet is set in a font. That sounds harmless and it is the root of a specific, visible problem: a font supplies letter shapes, and the ruled lines are drawn separately from line spacing. The two have no relationship to each other, so the model letters do not quite sit on the lines they are printed against. The x-height is a little too tall or a little too short, the ascender overshoots, and a child copying it learns to write a size that does not match the paper.
We do not use a font for the letterforms. Every letter is drawn as vector paths in the same coordinate space the ruling is generated from, and the whole sheet derives from a single measurement: the height of the letter body. The rows sit exactly three of those apart, which is the proportion every published handwriting paper uses, so the guides and the letters match by construction rather than by luck. That is checked by an automated test on every build, not by eye.
Drawing the letters ourselves buys a second thing a font cannot give. Because we know the order the strokes are made in, we can put a dot where each stroke begins. A font only knows the finished shape, which is why no font-based worksheet has ever been able to show stroke order. Handwriting practice sheets for kids
For a young child the size of the letters matters more than almost anything else on the page. A child whose writing spills over the lines is usually working on paper that is too small for their current control, not being careless. The presets here reproduce published primary paper exactly: a 9.53 mm letter body for kindergarten, 7.94 mm for grade 1 and 6.35 mm for grades 2 to 3, with an extra large option above those for a first attempt.
Name tracing is where most children start, and it is one line of typing here. So is a page of the letters a particular child finds hard, which is more use than another alphabet sheet. One thing worth knowing: a whole page of tracing is not the most effective sheet you can print. Occupational therapy guidance is consistent that a child who traces twelve identical rows stops attending after the first few and traces mechanically. Model at the top, which writes the text once and leaves ruled rows below it, or Trace, then copy, which alternates a traced row with an empty one, both ask the child to actually look.
Handwriting practice sheets for adults
Adults come to this for different reasons: notes nobody else can read, forms that get rejected, a hand that hurts after a page, or simply wanting writing that looks better. The Adult and Grade 5 and up sizes drop the letter body to the scale of ordinary ruled paper, around 2.7 to 2.9 mm, which is where most adults actually write.
Adult handwriting practice sheets work best with your own material. Copying the alphabet is not what you do all day; paste in a paragraph from something you write often and practise that. Work on one thing at a time rather than everything at once, and start with letter size and spacing before speed. If the aim is neat handwriting rather than a different style, the Grey model tracing style with Trace, then copy is the most useful combination: you follow the shape once, then write it unaided immediately underneath and can see the difference.
Cursive handwriting practice sheets
Cursive is a separate style rather than a harder version of print, and it is generally introduced once print letters are steady. Set Letterform to Cursive and every lowercase letter and capital is drawn as continuous joined writing, entering and leaving each letter on the baseline so the letters connect. There are also two Australian school cursive fonts if you need a particular regional hand.
Cursive handwriting practice sheets suit longer text better than single letters, because the join is the thing being learnt. A sentence, a verse, or a paragraph of copywork gives more joins per page than the alphabet does.
Choosing a letterform, and nine of them to choose from
The default letters are our own, and they are the only ones that can show stroke order. Under Letterform there are also seven school handwriting families to pick from, all openly licensed and credited on the attributions page: Andika, which SIL designed for literacy teaching and which has the single-storey a and g young children are taught; Delius and Patrick Hand, which are rounder and more informal; and the Australian school hands, Edu NSW ACT Foundation, Edu QLD Beginner, Edu AU VIC WA NT Hand and Edu NSW ACT Cursive, which matter if you are teaching to a particular state's curriculum.
People looking for cute or aesthetic handwriting practice sheets are usually after one of two different things. If you want the sheet itself to look better, the informal families above are the ones to try, and Grey model with Blank lines gives the cleanest page. If you want your own writing to end up looking better, the letterform matters far less than consistency: pick one hand, stay with it, and work on letter size and even spacing before anything else. A style you switch every week never becomes automatic.
Whatever you pick, the fitting is the same. Each font's x-height is measured off its own letter x at build time and scaled so it lands exactly on the midline of our ruling, which is why the letters sit on the lines in every family. Font metrics cannot be trusted for this: one of these families declares an x-height of 85 units on a 1000 unit em, which is simply wrong, and a generator that believed it would print letters at a third of the right size.
Printing, and the PDF
Print sends the sheet straight to your printer, one worksheet per physical page. Download PDF builds a real vector file in your browser, with its page box set to the paper you picked, so US Letter and A4 both come out at true size. It embeds no fonts at all, because the letters are paths rather than type, which is why a handwriting practice sheets PDF from here is a few kilobytes rather than a hundred.
One setting decides whether the print is right: choose 100 percent or Actual size in the print dialogue, not Fit to page. Fitting to page shrinks everything by a few percent. It is invisible on screen and it makes every letter the wrong height on paper, which defeats the point of matching published sizes in the first place.

How to make handwriting practice sheets in Microsoft Word
