Handwriting worksheets by grade
The most common reason handwriting practice goes badly is paper that is the wrong size for the child's current control. Letters spilling over the lines usually means the ruling is too small, not that the child is being careless.
Match the stage to the child rather than to the age on the label, and go one size larger if the writing looks cramped.

How the sizes are worked out
Every size on this site derives from one measurement: the letter body, sometimes called the x-height. Published handwriting paper follows a consistent rule, which is that the space above the midline, the letter body, and the space below the baseline are all equal. The distance from one writing line to the next is therefore exactly three times the letter body.
That rule is why the guides on these sheets line up with the letters at every size. The letterforms and the ruling are generated from the same number, so they cannot drift apart. Worksheets built from a font instead position their guides from line spacing, which has no relationship to the font's own proportions, and the letters end up floating off the lines they are drawn against.
